Unknown is unloved. Because Smartwool is not known to the general public in Europe despite its many strengths, we explain their qualities.

Smartwool counts on Merino wool

The days of goat’s wool socks are long gone. Yet clothing brand Smartwool dared to put wool at the center of their collections. What began in 1994 with designing socks that could handle even the coldest temperatures has since expanded into an entire apparel and sports collection. Merino wool was soon the key to success at Smartwool.

Smartwool works with wool from the merino sheep, one of the oldest breeds of sheep in the entire world. Their wool is known for its softness and ability to make sheep thrive even in extreme climates. Moreover, the sheepskin is a class product that is inspected time and again to ensure good quality.

And why wool?

Wool deters many because, on the one hand, it stings. On the other hand, also because of the corny and wintry character it carries. Merino wool effortlessly disproves all afterthoughts and prejudices. We list its strengths.
Ultra-soft natural super fiber
The wool chosen by Smartwool does not remotely resemble the prickly and itchy wool you know from our grandparents’ knitting. The merino sheep produces only superfine and ultra-soft wool. The soft characteristic is due to the fact that the thin and fine fiber hairs of the wool fibers cannot stand upright. As a result, they cannot sting the skin.
Summer or winter? Body temperature and moisture transport remain optimal
Contrary to popular belief, Merino wool maintains your body temperature winter and summer. In cold conditions, wool fibers, depending on how densely they are woven, trap air to create a layer of insulation. In hot conditions, the wool quickly wicks sweat away from the skin, keeping the body cool and dry.
Moisture is also wicked away by the porous properties of wool. Therefore, unlike synthetic material, you do not experience a wet, cold or clammy feeling after exertion. Even when soaked, the fibers still retain 60% of their insulating capacity. Synthetic material, on the other hand, wicks away sweat only when it is penetrated. Thus, the body must warm up before moisture can evaporate.
Unpleasant odors stay out
Odors caused by bacteria are immediately absorbed by Merino wool. This exceptional feature ensures that unpleasant odors are captured and do not accumulate. So don’t worry about the smell of your clothing, Smartwool puts bacteria on a heel.
Exceptionally durable

All Smartwool products are particularly sustainable because of their biodegradability and reusability. Close attention is also paid in production to creating as little surplus or waste as possible and using recycled materials as much as possible.

By the way, discarded garments made of 100% wool decompose completely naturally and relatively quickly. The wool can also be perfectly reused without deteriorating in quality, thus reducing CO2 emissions. In turn, the longer elimination of odors reduces the need for washing. In addition to saving water, it also reduces the amount of plastic in the environment.

No wolf in sheep’s clothing

Smartwool prefers to work exclusively with wool that carries the “ZQ label”. This quality label guarantees that the sheep are treated humanely, they are allowed to live in natural and free conditions, and the skin remains intact when the wool is removed. This is important not only for the sheep, but also for wool quality. When a sheep is under stress, it is reflected in its wool fiber. It creates an odd diameter and weak points which detracts from quality.

Local organizations also play an important role in the entire production process. Smartwool calls on them to ensure that the natural process and local areas are protected. Animal welfare, ecological sustainability and the delivery of quality labeled products are just some of the pillars Smartwool relies on.

Experiences of team Runners’ lab

“Smartwool has amazed me more than once. I love how they manage to regulate your body temperature every time, regardless of the temperature difference. This past summer, I headed to the Dolomites in Italy for a mountain vacation. In the morning, at the foot of the mountain, it was around twenty degrees. The only layer I was wearing was a Smartwool baselayer. After a brisk hike with lots of altimeters, the temperature dropped to seven degrees. Thirteen degrees difference, but with a jacket over my baselayer there was no question of cold. I am also a fan of the Smartwool gloves. When running, I usually run out of gloves quickly because of the sweaty feeling that can occur. With Smartwool, I can keep them on effortlessly. Their products work rock-solid, especially in varying ambient temperatures!”

“You don’t have to convince me about their socks anymore. When I wear Smartwool socks, I never suffer from cold feet. Even in the summer I enjoy wearing them. Even if you walk for hours, you don’t sweat in these socks. They are also super soft and don’t stink. Blessed!”
