At Runners’ lab, we believe that a running shoe is more than a sum of technology, foam and looks. Of course performance is important, but behind every brand is also a story: a vision of running, a way of working and often a beautiful history that has shaped the brand into what it is today.

That’s why at Runners’ lab we deliberately choose a diverse selection. Besides big international names, you’ll also find smaller, European running brands. Brands that may not shout as loudly, but have all the more to say.

Europe as a breeding ground for craftsmanship

Europe has a rich tradition in sports, design and craft. Many European running shoe brands have evolved from family businesses, run by people who sport, test and improve themselves. And often for generations. Decisions are made there not only based on sales figures, but also on durability, quality and long-term vision.

That doesn’t make these brands “better” than big international players, it makes them different. And it’s those differences that give you, the runner, more choice to find something that really suits you. From Finland to Spain, from Denmark to Italy: Europe remains a source of quirky running brands with a clear vision. We highlight four European brands, each with their own story.

Diadora: Italian sports history with modern ambitions

Diadora has been breathing sports history since 1948. The Italian brand built decades of experience in elite sports and today translates it to the modern runner. What typifies Diadora is the combination of Italian design culture, technical expertise and historical commitment to sport. In the 1990s, a research center was established with experts from bioengineering and orthopedics to develop even better performance shoes.

In recent years, Diadora continues to evolve, not only through performance-oriented models, but also by paying attention to durability and quality. Their running shoes are the result of years of know-how, but never lose their character. Performance and passion go hand in hand here.

Although many sports brands move their production, Diadora still makes some of its premium collections in Italy using traditional methods and high-quality materials.

NNormal: authentic performance and respect for nature

NNormal is a relatively young but extremely interesting European brand, born from a collaboration between world-renowned trail runner Kilian Jornet and the family-owned Camper company from Spain. The brand was founded in 2022 from a shared belief: the outdoor industry needed a new, conscious path: one that combines performance with responsibility for people and the environment.

The name “NNormal” is a nod to the brand’s two geographical and philosophical roots: Norway (where Jornet lives and tests the products extensively) and Mallorca (where Camper is based and where the design takes place). The products are designed with a focus on functionality, durability and timeless design, and tested in rugged nature, from the fjords of Norway to Mediterranean trails.

What makes NNormal special is that it is not just about performance. The “Your Path, No Trace” philosophy emphasizes that their equipment should be designed to last and to do so with minimal impact on the environment. From running shoes to technical clothing and accessories, the focus of all NNormal products is on durability and functionality.

The designs are often minimalist, with neutral colors and no garish logos. The focus is entirely on performance and durability. Unlike many other sports brands that release a new collection every season (which encourages overconsumption), NNormal releases products designed to last for years. They update their products only when there is a technological improvement, not to follow fashion trends.

The collaboration between Jornet – one of the most respected names in trail running – and Camper – a family-owned company with long experience in footwear and design craftsmanship – makes NNormal a brand that combines craftsmanship and performance with a human and responsible product story.

MOVV: Danish innovation, minimalist and progressive

MOVV represents a new generation of European running brands. Born in Denmark, and with a Belgian touch. Runners’ lab provided MOVV with data to develop their shoes(you can read more about that here). The brand starts from data, biomechanics and a very clear vision: make running as efficient and natural as possible. The brand is not just “another running shoe.” It is built on Scandinavian functionality, science and real data from the running world. In addition to Runners’ lab, Danish running specialist Kaiser Sport & Ortopedi (KSO) is also involved, providing a combination of Scandinavian design and Belgian/Danish expertise in biomechanics.

What sets MOVV apart is the premise: “Form follows function.” Research, including more than 1,000,000 foot scans of Belgian runners, forms the basis for design decisions. This results in shoes that focus on stability, natural movement patterns and injury prevention. The design is sleek and minimalist, but under the hood is a surprising amount of research.

Another remarkable thing about MOVV: each pair of their shoes is equipped with built-in NFC technology. This chip allows you to provide feedback directly to the developers. You can give feedback on any part of the shoe – the upper, insole, midsole, outsole, laces, durability, comfort, fit, performance – anything that strikes you, positive or negative. Each model includes its own NFC chip, embedded in the tongue of the right shoe. A small detail with a clear purpose: better data, better shoes. They call this a co-creation at MOVV, because the feedback shared is taken seriously by MOVV and incorporated into the design.

Karhu: Finnish solidity since 1916

Karhu is one of the oldest sports brands in the world. The brand originated in Finland, where nature, simplicity and functionality are central. The brand was founded in Helsinki in 1916 as a small workshop where local birch wood was made into skis, javelins and discus throwers, and soon into running shoes for elite athletes.

Initially, Karhu produced skis made of local birch wood, discus throwers, javelins and running shoes. The brand gained international fame during the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp. Finnish athletes, nicknamed the “Flying Finns,” won five gold medals with Karhu spikes, and all medals in the javelin throw were won with Karhu spears.

The name Karhu means “bear” in Finnish: a symbol of strength and perseverance. You can feel that Scandinavian DNA to this day in their running shoes: thoughtful, reliable and built to last.

Known for their simplistic, nature-inspired designs, Karhu has introduced technical innovations in running shoes over the years. Technologies such as their Fulcrum concept are the result of years of biomechanical knowledge. No hype, just confidence: quintessentially Finnish.

Although Karhu has been around for more than a century, the brand remains modern and innovative. Their collection combines historical expertise with contemporary technology, a rare blend especially appreciated by runners seeking durability, functional design and authenticity.

David and Goliath: not a contradiction, but a balance

At Runners’ lab, we don’t believe in black-and-white thinking. Big international brands from the US and Japan have earned their place thanks to scale, innovativeness and proven performance. At the same time, smaller European brands show that quality can also come from focus, tradition and proximity.

It is not a battle between big and small. It’s an interplay. Each brand – regardless of its size or origin – brings something unique to our shelves.

Consciously chosen, for you as a runner

As a running store, it is our job to make choices. Not everything fits our vision, but everything you find with us is carefully selected. We look not just at trends, but at what works over the long term for runners with different profiles, goals and expectations.

By choosing a mix of European and international brands, big and small, we want to show what Runners’ lab stands for: knowledge, diversity and respect for the story behind each product.

Because in the end, it’s not about where a brand comes from, it’s about what it does for you when you tie your laces and step outside.
